Create the Festive Atmosphere of Cozumel With These Design Tips
The charm and beauty of the tropical rainforests of Cozumel can be as close as
your back door with this selection of lush tropical and sub-tropical plants.
While most rainforest plants do not demand too much attention or care, almost
all prefer a warm climate and a moist, fertile, well-drained soil.
When planting in the ground, it is a good idea to dig the hole as large as
possible; at least as deep as the original container and about 2 to 3 times as
wide. Tropical plants, due to the massive amounts of rainfall in their native
habitat, typically develop a shallow root system that will benefit from a wider
planting hole. Mix the existing soil with a premium planting mix to help ensure
proper drainage. Adding a slow-release fertilizer to the soil mix, prior to
planting, will aid in establishing the plant and provide enough food for
several weeks or months.
In areas where temperatures regularly dip below 40°F, these tropical treasures
should be planted in containers and moved indoors for the winter. When planting
in pots, it is important to use a high quality potting mix, not a heavy soil
mix that will retain too much water. Container plants will benefit from the
regular use of water soluble fertilizers applied to the soil or as a light
foliar spray.
In planning your tropical oasis, it is important to consider factors such as
the mature size of the plants that you will be selecting, as well as the size
of your garden. Tropical plants can be arranged by height or grouped according
to leaf texture or flower colors and bloom seasons. Also remember to include
understory plants to fill in any gaps between larger plants or to simply add a
splash of color, where needed. Keep in mind that rainforests can be densely
packed with a wide variety of these little gems, so don’t be afraid of
overcrowding.
When considering your design, remember that there are no straight lines in the
rainforests. Create your design with soft curves or meandering borders for a
more tropical effect. The addition of a pond or waterfall will also help to
bring the tropics to your door while adding a cooling, calming effect to your
little slice of paradise.
